Elvis Presley was no stranger to acting. Although Elvis had no formal training as an actor, thirty-one Elvis films were made between the years of 1956 and 1969. The most popular Elvis films, such as Wild in the Country and Loving You, are from his early years as a performer. Presley films feature the King’s sensational dance moves and songs from hit albums. From the earlier years of Elvis movies such as Love Me Tender and Jailhouse Rock to the 1968 film Speedway, Elvis movies were most adored by young women who appreciated the actor’s good looks and charm. Although there were many people who watched Elvis movies, film critics were generally less than pleased with the quality of Presley’s performances. Many critics felt that Presley films lacked substance and only served to promote the star. Others said that Elvis Presley should stick to singing and dancing and leave acting to the pros.
